Merrivale Standing Stone, Dartmoor

Ancient Stones

by David Gibbeson

This image is of the south standing stone at Merrivale with the stone circle in the background. Composition with this shot was quite challenging because I was trying to show a sense of scale. I wanted the standing stone to contrast against the horizon while showing the stone circle and show the snow-covered Great Mis Tor in the distance.

Showing Great Mis Tor and the snow that covers it reveals that the moor is quite cold. I think this adds to the credibility of the tiny bit of ice-covered grass. Without the ice and snow, it could be taken on any morning with the warm colours from the dawn sunlight.
